Chapter 12

“Everything’s better with pie,” Mrs. Granger pronounced, smacking her lips as she pulled the plate of warm apple pie toward her. “I don’t know why that is true, but it is.”

“You’re absolutely right, Gram,” Amanda said, using her pet name for the old lady. “Everything is better with pie.”

A few years before, Mrs. Granger had realized Amanda had very little family left and had made her an honorary granddaughter. Even though she’d asked Amanda to call her Gram, there were times she still called her Mrs. Granger, and the old lady never corrected her.

And they both agreed on one thing: the best place for pie in Ravenwood Cove was always Ivy’s Café.

Amanda had been coming to Ivy’s since the first full day she’d lived in Ravenwood Cove. It was the sort of small-town diner she’d never known she needed in her life, until she had tasted their homemade desserts and bacon cheeseburgers. Now, when she walked in, half of the customers crammed into the red leather upholstered booths would look up over their clam chowder or fried shrimp plates and smile at her in recognition. It was a new experience for Amanda, to be part of a community, and that’s exactly what the little cafe was. Ravenwood Cove had a lot of places that were well-loved and frequented by the locals, but Ivy’s was as close to the heart of the little coastal town as anything. Just about everyone came there, and only God knew how many first dates, proposals, house shopping discussions, chess games, or marital spats had taken place over its Formica-topped tables. The back room was used for everything from Rotary and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to any sort of party that was too big for someone’s house or too casual to be at Amanda’s Victorian-era inn.

“I just can’t believe I didn’t hear anything last night!” Mrs. Granger said bitterly, waving her fork at Amanda and ignoring the crumbs it dropped on the table. “Whoever did it must’ve been pretty quiet about ripping it up like that, or maybe that pill I took before bedtime had me sleeping too soundly to wake up.”

“I’m sorry about how stressful this whole thing has been for you,” Amanda said. She worried more about her elderly friend than she cared to admit, and it hurt to see her so upset.

“I have no idea what sort of hooligan would do that, and I certainly have no idea whatever happened to that Carwood woman.” She looked down at her pie. “Wasn’t Ruby supposed to bring me some ice cream for this?”

She hadn’t ordered any, but Amanda flagged down Ruby Gilbert, the waitress who was as much a fixture at Ivy’s café as the refrigerated display case near the front counter, and asked for a small bowl of vanilla ice cream. Ruby nodded and walked away, humming a song from Grease under her breath.

“She’ll have it out in just a minute.”

Mrs. Granger locked eyes with her. “Am I starting to lose it? Tell me the truth.
